In Kelly’s follow-up, The Seventh Queen, Askia has morphed into a ruthless manipulator, willing to use any hint of leverage to save her own life and to prevent her world from falling under the dominion of the power-hungry Radovan. But Askia has no intention of going quietly. ![]() Emperor Radovan of Roven, Askia’s kidnapper, intends her to be his seventh queen, to kill her and take her power for his own, as he has done six times before. For Askia is not just royalty: She is also a death witch, a rare magical talent who can both commune with and command the dead. But during what should have been her triumph, a political marriage to the Emperor of Vishir, she was kidnapped, and the emperor and his senior wife, Ozura, were murdered-but not before Ozura pledged her soul to Askia’s service. Greta Kelly’s The Frozen Crown introduced Askia, the exiled Queen of Seravesh, as a confident leader struggling to survive amid the schemes and machinations of the Vishir court. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() How did you first learn of the historic, expansive deaf community on Martha’s Vineyard, and what was it about the Islanders that compelled you to write Show Me a Sign and Set Me Free? PW spoke with LeZotte via email about the inspiration behind her novels, her research into Martha’s Vineyard life in the early 19th century, and how her work as a librarian in Florida has impacted her writing. Set three years later, LeZotte’s companion novel, Set Me Free, brings Mary to a remote manor house, where she is tasked with teaching a younger deaf girl with no prior language how to communicate. Mary has no idea that deaf people anywhere are treated as anything but equal by society until, through an act of brutality disguised as scholarship, Mary is taken to Boston where she’s treated as a medical subject. The year is 1805, a time when deaf and hearing Islanders used a common sign language to communicate. The historical novel (winner of the 2021 Schneider Family Book Award) takes place on Martha’s Vineyard, an island off the coast of Massachusetts. In her debut novel, Show Me a Sign, Ann Clare LeZotte, who has been Deaf since childhood, introduced 11-year-old Mary Lambert who, like her father and many of his ancestors, has been deaf from birth. ![]() ![]() ![]() But as Arrah’s half-demon sister resumes her quest for destruction, peace may require the ultimate sacrifice.… ![]() Now, forced to give up the gift of magic she’d sought for so long, she must decipher the legacy of her past life as the orisha Dimma-and weave an uneasy alliance between her beloved Rudjek, the Demon King, and the remaining orishas, hoping to restore peace to all of their worlds. ![]() Īrrah has sacrificed almost everything in her battle against the Demon King. It’s natural, in this world, that every human has a daemon, a being in the form of an animal that’s an outward expression of the human’s inner self. In this book, the story is set in a world that mirrors our own and is centered on Lyra Belacqua, a brave golden-haired girl who’s supposedly an orphan, which is why she’s raised among the Scholars of Jordan College (which I thought of as the equivalent of Oxford) - the only girl there as women are not often Scholars. The Golden Compass is the first novel in a young-adult fantasy series. Reading it in 2023 was the best time to pick it up.
